Golf Simulator Lighting: How to Get It Right

Golf simulator lighting is the setup step almost everyone skips, and it's the reason more than a few "bad launch monitors" are actually just badly lit rooms. Camera-based monitors read light the way your eyes do, and your projector needs the opposite — a controlled, dim environment for a sharp image. Getting both right in the same room isn't complicated, but it does take a plan. Here's how to do it.

Why lighting affects your launch monitor

Flickering fluorescent tubes, a single harsh bulb, or a room that's bright on one side and dark on the other can all throw off readings, especially on delicate short shots. How to balance both

Color temperature: does it matter?

Cooler, daylight-balanced LEDs (around 5000-6500K) tend to read most neutrally to a camera-based monitor and make your projected colors look truest on screen, while warmer bulbs can cast a slight tint that's more noticeable on a bright, sharp image than in a normal living room. If you're buying new fixtures anyway, lean daylight-balanced rather than warm white.

Placement that actually works

Mount lighting along the ceiling to the sides of the hitting area rather than directly above the ball, angled to spread light evenly rather than spotlight one point. This keeps strong light off the screen while still giving your launch monitor's cameras a clean, shadow-free view of the ball. If you're building in a garage or basement with exposed joists, running LED strip lighting along the framing is usually easier than mounting fixed panel lights, and it's simple to adjust later if your setup changes.

Common lighting mistakes

The most common mistake is treating lighting as an afterthought — building the whole room, then discovering the launch monitor is inconsistent or the screen looks washed out, and only then investigating why. The second most common mistake is overcorrecting: going fully dark for a great picture, then wondering why a camera-based monitor is misreading short shots. Both problems usually trace back to the same fix — even, dimmable LED light, kept off the screen and out of the camera's direct line of sight.

Testing your setup before you commit

Before permanently mounting anything, run a quick test session with your actual gear under temporary lighting. Take a few shots with the room lit the way you're planning, check the data against what you'd expect, then look at how the projected image reads. It's a lot easier to move a clamp light a few feet than to redo permanently mounted fixtures after your enclosure and screen are already up.

You don't strictly need a purpose-built sim lighting kit — smart LED bulbs on a dimmable circuit can get you most of the way there for less money, and they're easy to adjust room by room if your sim shares space with anything else. A dedicated kit built for simulator rooms tends to give more even, wider coverage in one purchase and is worth it if you're starting from a completely bare ceiling. Either route beats leaving the room's original fixture untouched.
